Business Analyst / Content Strategist

Meet Sheilla, a seasoned news producer who worked for 17 years in one of Asia’s media giants, ABS-CBN Corporation. She was a driving force behind the Philippines’ longest-running news program. However, in 2020, ABS-CBN was denied a franchise renewal, which many attribute to the company’s critical reporting of the government’s anti-drug war campaign.

Because of the franchise denial, Sheilla was among the thousands of employees retrenched. Undeterred, she sought new opportunities in a foreign country and made the bold move to Canada in November 2021. With a thirst for knowledge, she pursued two postgraduate certificates - excelling in Digital Media Marketing and completing Strategic Relationship Marketing.

Currently, Sheilla is a Business Analyst co-op at Scotia Wealth Management under the Wealth Management Scholarship Program - a product of Scotiabank and George Brown College’s partnership. In her current role, she contributed to the completion of a new learning resource platform, and has also proposed innovative strategies to improve onboarding experience and learning compliance of new hires.

Beyond her busy work and academic commitments, she shares her experiences as an international student on social media being one of George Brown College’s student ambassador. Moreover, she moderates a Facebook group that has grown into 250,000 members, most of them aspire to become international students in Canada.

Building her skillset, Sheilla delved into customer service by working part-time at McDonald’s. These experiences, along with her personal journeys, fueled her creativity and inspired some of her school projects that were recognized as best in class.

Sheilla’s story is one of resilience, rediscovery, reinvention, and a continued pursuit of knowledge and growth. Wherever life takes her, she is driven by passion to make an impact in her community and organization.
